Here's some news notes from the Saints' opening practice:
- After receiving a new contract extension, wide receiver Marques Colston sat out the Saints' opening practice to rest an ailing left knee he had drained Wednesday. Colston rode a stationary bike this morning and expects to return this afternoon.
- Others not participating include tight end Eric Johnson (ankle), cornerback Mike McKenzie (knee) and safety Josh Bullocks (knee).
- Tight end Jeremy Shockey practiced on a limited basis, but Shockey threw a little jab at the New York Giants by saying, "Mickey Loomis and Sean Payton wanted me more than the New York Giants." Shockey also said he never gave up hope that he'd be traded to New Orleans.
- As expected, neither defensive tackle Sedrick Ellis, nor cornerback Tracy Porter were at practice as Day 1 of their respective holdouts began.
- Cornerbacks Randall Gay and Jason David began camp with the first team. Nothing is set at this position so having these two start camp with the 1s isn't a huge surprise.
- Middle linebacker Mark Simoneau also ran with the first team with Jonathan Vilma still on second team. Vilma said he anticipates his recovering knee injury shouldn't hamper him from wininng the starting job. Vilma made a nice play to blow up a run by Pierre Thomas during team drills.
- Adrian Arrington came up with a couple of nice grabs including a 45-yard diving catch past corner Greg Fassitt. Surprisingly, Tyler Palko made the great throw. The two connected again as Palko found Arrington down the middle of the field for about a 30-yard connection.
- At defensive tackle, Brian Young and Kendrick Clancy ran with the first team, while Hollis Thomas and Antwan Lake spent most of their morning practice with the 2s.
