Aug. 4 afternoon report

- Some encouraging news on RB Deuce McAllister as he participated in both practices for the first time in training camp since last year. He looked more crisp than he has been through his one-a-day sessions.

- DT Hollis Thomas (knee), WR Marques Colston (knee), WR Devery Henderson (hamstring), CB Tracy Porter (hamstring), DE Josh Savage (shoulder) and DT Brian Young (knee) all sat out of both Monday practices.

Payton said Colston’s knee injury is a different from the swelling caused from a left knee scope. This bruise is on the same knee but it’s behind his leg. Payton said Colston would go if this were the regular season, but will be questionable for Thursday’s preseason opener in Arizona.

TE Jeremy Shockey (leg) was in pads, but was limited for both practices. CB Mike McKenzie (knee) and safety Josh Bullocks (knee) sat out the morning session. LB Jonathan Vilma (knee), WR David Patten (rest) and newly signed DT Tim McGill (foot) didn’t practice in the afternoon. McGill's injury after one practice probably doesn't bode well for him to make this team.

- McAllister, Shockey, Porter, McKenzie and Henderson will not play in Thursday's preseason opener in Arizona.

- Probably the top play of the afternoon session came when DE Bobby McCray beat RT Jon Stinchcomb off the snap and flustered QB Drew Brees into a wobbly interception by CB Randall Gay. The pass was intended for Skyler Green.
