Saints statement on owner Tom Benson cancer surgery

On Wednesday, December 10, Saints Owner Tom Benson underwent a medical procedure at Ochsner Medical Center in New Orleans. The procedure was performed to remove a 3-centimeter malignant mass on Mr. Benson’s left kidney.

The procedure was performed by Ochsner Urologists Dr. Stephen F. Bardot and Dr. Richard Vanlangendonck.

Mr. Benson is under the primary care of his personal physician and Saints Team Doctor, John R. Amoss.

“The mass was discovered when Mr. Benson came in for a CT scan for an unrelated issue,” said Amoss. “Once this mass was detected, it was subsequently removed by freezing the mass and then removing it. It was diagnosed as early-stage renal cell cancer, and the prognosis for this type of cancer removed at this stage is excellent. We anticipate a full and complete recovery, and he will not need any radiation or chemotherapy.”

“He is resting comfortably at his home in New Orleans and is expected to be back in the office next week. He was very thankful to the wonderful doctors and staff at Ochsner Medical Center and the treatment he received while there,” said Saints Vice President of Communications Greg Bensel. “He will not be making the trip with the team to Detroit this weekend.”
